Your roof isn’t something you look at every day, so it’s easy to miss the warning signs when something’s going wrong. But ignoring shingle issues can lead to bigger headaches; like leaks, mold, or water damage inside your home. The good news? Your shingles usually give you some clues when they’re past their prime.
Here are 7 signs to watch out for:
Your Shingles Are Curling or Buckling
If your shingles are starting to curl up at the edges or look wavy, that’s a sign they’re not holding up anymore. It usually means they’ve taken on moisture or are just plain worn out. Either way, it’s time to replace them.

You’re Missing Shingles
leaves parts of your roof exposed to the elements, and that will lead to leaks. One or two might be fixable, but if more than that are missing, it might be time for a full replacement.

Your Gutters Are Full of Shingle Granules
Asphalt shingles shed tiny granules over time. If you’re noticing a lot of black, sandy grit in your gutters or around your downspouts, your shingles are wearing out. Those granules help protect your roof from the sun, so once they’re gone, the shingles break down faster.

You’re Seeing Cracks
Cracked shingles are usually caused by wind damage or age. A few cracked shingles can let water seep in under the surface, and that’s when rot starts. If you’re seeing a lot of cracking, don’t wait, get them replaced.

Dark Streaks or Mossy Spots
Dark streaks on your roof? That’s often algae, and while it doesn’t mean your roof is failing right now, it’s a sign that moisture is hanging around too long. If moss or algae is taking over, it could be time for a closer look.

Your Roof Just Looks Old
Even if nothing looks terrible, sometimes your roof just looks tired. If it’s faded, patchy, or you know it’s been 20+ years since it was last replaced, it’s probably nearing the end of its life. Better to plan ahead than wait for a leak.

You’ve Got Leaks or Water Stains Inside
If you’re seeing water spots on your ceiling or walls, that means moisture’s already gotten through your roof. By that point, it’s not just about replacing shingles, you could be dealing with structural damage underneath.
Roofs don’t last forever, and shingles don’t give up all at once. Spotting the signs early can save you from major repairs down the road. If something looks off, get a pro to check it out.
Better safe than soaked.
